Described by head coach Jeff Traylor as "a perfect example of what it truly means to be a student-athlete," Ahofitu Maka has already earned his degree while starting in 44 career games for UTSA. The Honolulu, Hawaii, native becomes the Roadrunners' third NFF National Scholar-Athlete in the program's short 12-year history.
After graduating magna cum laude with a degree in cyber security in August, Maka is currently pursuing a master's in management of technology. A two-time First Team Academic All-District selection, he was a member of the 2021 Conference USA All-Academic Team and received a 2019 C-USA Academic Medal. During his career, Maka has been selected three times each to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, UTSA President's List and UTSA Honor Roll.
This season, the game captain has guided the Roadrunners to bowl eligibility with a 6-2 record as they sit atop the conference standings with a 4-0 C-USA record. Maka is the starting center on an offense averaging 330.4 passing yards per game, which leads C-USA and ranks sixth in the FBS. UTSA leads the conference with 489.8 yards of total offense per game while ranking second in points per game (35.6) and fourth in rushing yards per game (159.4). Maka has paved the way for quarterback Frank Harris, who leads C-USA and ranks third in the FBS with 357.1 yards of total offense per game.
In 2021, the two-time Second Team All-C-USA selection led the Roadrunners to their best season in school history, winning their first conference championship en route to a 12-2 record and their second-consecutive bowl game appearance. Along the way to that C-USA title, Maka only allowed one sack and three hits on the quarterback while helping the offense set school records for total yards (6,146), total yards per game (439), passing yards (3,577), passing yards per game (255.5), points scored (516) and points per game (36.9). In 2020, Maka also allowed just one sack and three hits on the quarterback while helping the offense set records for rushing yards (2,585), rushing yards per game (215.4) and rushing touchdowns (24).
A member of the UTSA Football Leadership Council, Maka has volunteered with the San Antonio Food Bank and UTSA Move-In Day as well as participating in Congress on Children and San Antonio's MLK Day Parade.
