About the BCS

The Bowl Championship Series was established in 1998 to guarantee a true national champion by matching up the No. 1 and 2 teams in the country, while preserving the bowl system. Created by the six equity conferences and the University of Notre Dame, the BCS utilized a combination of two human polls and six computer rankings to determine the standings.

The BCS consisted of the Rose Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, the Orange Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl. In 2006, the organizers added a fifth game, which rotated between the sites of the four bowls as the BCS National Championship game. The fifth game allowed the bowls to maintain their traditional match ups with the exception of the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams who play in the championship game. Conferences whose champions earned automatic berths into BCS games included the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10 and SEC.

The teams were ranked each week in the standings by their BCS Average, which gave equal weight to three components: the USA Today Coaches Poll, the Harris Interactive College Football Poll and an average of six computer rankings.
  1. USA Today Coaches Poll - A team's USA Today Coaches Poll Percentage is determined by actual received points in the USA Today Poll divided by a maximum 1575 voting points.
  2. Harris Interactive College Football Poll - The Harris Interactive College Football Poll Percentage was calculated as a percentage of the 114 voters who comprised the poll. Similar to the USA Today Poll, each team's poll percentage was calculated by dividing their actual voting points received by 2850 (the maximum number of points possible in the poll).
  3. Computer Rankings Percentage - Teams were assigned an inverse point total (25 for #1, 24 for #2, etc.) for each of their respective computer poll rankings to determine the overall computer component. The highest and lowest ranking for each team were dropped, and the sum total of the remaining four rankings was divided by 100 (the maximum possible points). This figure produced a Computer Rankings Percentage. The six computer ranking providers were Anderson & Hester, Richard Billingsley, Colley Matrix, Kenneth Massey, Jeff Sagarin and Peter Wolfe. Each computer ranking accounted for schedule strength within its formula.
