Luke Schuermann has remained humble during a record-breaking career as one of the premier Division III players in the nation while excelling in the classroom at one of top academic institutions in the country. The St. Louis, Missouri, native now becomes the second-consecutive and third NFF National Scholar-Athlete overall from Johns Hopkins.
Maintaining a 3.61 GPA and majoring in mechanical engineering, Schuermann earned 2021 First Team and 2022 Second Team CSC Academic All-America honors. A two-time CSC Academic All-District selection, he also has made the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll twice. He is on pace to graduate in May.
The 2023 team captain led Johns Hopkins to a 20-3 record over the previous two seasons, including a share of the Centennial Conference title, an appearance in the second round of the Division III Playoffs and a final No. 13 ranking in 2021. Last year, the Blue Jays ended the season as Centennial-MAC Bowl Champions with a final No. 21 ranking.
Twice landing Associated Press All-America honors, First Team in 2021 and Second Team in 2022, Schuermann is a two-time Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Year, and a two-time D3football.com First Team All-American.
The 6-foot-4, 255-pound, defensive end entered 2023 with 116 career tackles, 47 tackles for loss, 25 sacks, five forced fumbles, two pass breakups, and one fumble recovery. He has led the conference in sacks the last two seasons, and he already holds multiple spots in the school record books. Seven games into the 2023 season, Schuermann has added 40 tackles, 12 tackles for a loss and eight sacks to his totals, ranking second among active players in all NCAA divisions in career sacks per game (1.14) and first in tackles for loss per game (2.03). The undefeated Blue Jays (7-0) hold the No. 7 spot in the AFCA national rankings.
Off the field, Schuermann completed an internship with Rawlings Sporting Goods, exploring the effectiveness of different materials to reduce baseball helmet impacts. He is the Blue Jays’ leader with Team IMPACT, a national non-profit that matches children facing serious health issues with college athletic teams as honorary team members, and he participated in the Leadership Coaching Program through the JHU Office of Student Development.
