Described by head coach Don Morel as “the consummate leader who has handled himself with grace, integrity and dignity”, Liam Thompson has produced jaw-dropping statistics as the Wabash quarterback while amassing an impressive 3.87 GPA in the classroom. The Indianapolis native now becomes the fourth NFF National Scholar-Athlete from Wabash and the first since 1990.
A 2022 CSC First Team Academic All-American as well as a CSC Academic All-District pick, Thompson is on track to graduate this spring, majoring in rhetoric with a double minor in film & digital media and Spanish. A two-time North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Scholar-Athlete, he has made the Dean’s List every semester.
The starting quarterback at Wabash since arriving on campus, Thompson led the Little Giants to a share of the 2019 NCAC title and a berth in the Division III Playoffs. A three-time team captain, he twice landed Second Team All-Region honors from D3Football.com, and he is a two-time NCAC Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-NCAC selection. In 2019, he was recognized as the NCAC Newcomer of the Year and a Second Team All-NCAC selection.
Entering the 2023 season, his career totals included 623 passes for 8,860 yards and 79 touchdowns while adding 1,053 yards and 22 touchdowns on 306 rushes. The leading passer in Division III last season, he averaged 358.8 yards per game, and he broke the Wabash and NCAC single-season records for passing yards (3,588 yards), total offense (3,937 yards). He also set school single-season records for completion percentage (71.9%) and passing efficiency (186.4) last season.
This season he has passed for 1,704 yards and 18 touchdowns while rushing for 489 yards and eight touchdowns. His career yards total now stands at 11,941, which is 114 yards short of the school record, previously set in 2002 at 12,054. The mark already stands as the North Coast Athletic Conference record.
Thompson was accepted to Wabash’s prestigious Center for Innovation, Business, and Entrepreneurship program and has interned with the Eli Lilly Co. and the Peakstone Group. As a Wabash admissions office ambassador, he has guided more than 500 campus tours since 2021. He also has worked as a counselor at the renowned Manning Passing Academy for the past three years, the only Division III quarterback to be so honored.
