A three-year starter at safety for Virginia, Stephen Phelan led the Cavaliers to a 23-13 record, an ACC title and a 34-27 victory over Georgia in the Peach Bowl. In 1996, he led the team with four interceptions, earning Honorable Mention All-ACC honors. Selected to play in the Blue-Gray All-Star Game, Phelan accumulated seven career interceptions. A First Team Academic All-American and two-time Academic All-ACC selection, he compiled a 3.7 GPA in history and received the Jim Tatum Award as the ACC’s top senior scholar-athlete. Phelan was a member of ODK, the Raven Honor Society, Golden Key and Phi Eta Sigma. He earned his J.D. from Virginia and his master’s of divinity from the Reformed Theological Seminary. Phelan is currently the director of mercy ministry for Harbor Presbyterian Church in San Diego.
