A three-year starter at Virginia under College Football Hall of Fame coach George Welsh, running back Tiki Barber led the Cavaliers to a 25-12 record, an ACC title and victories in the 1994 Independence Bowl and 1995 Peach Bowl. A two-time Third Team All-American, he was named the Offensive MVP of the Peach Bowl after rushing for 103 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. A co-captain of the 1996 squad, Barber was named the 1996 ACC MVP and Offensive MVP after pacing the conference in rushing yards (1,360), rushing touchdowns (14), punt return yards (241) and all-purpose yards (1,859).
A two-time First Team All-ACC selection, he also led the ACC in rush attempts (265), rushing yards (1,397), rushing touchdowns (14) and all-purpose yards (1,906) in 1995. From that same season, Barber holds school records for single-season carries, rushing yards and all-purpose yards by a junior. He also holds school records for consecutive games of 100+ rushing yards (8) and career games of 100+ rushing yards (19). Barber ranks second in career rushing yards (3,389) and single-season rushing yards (1,397); third in career all-purpose yards (4,869), single-season all-purpose yards (1,906) and single-game all-purpose yards (311); and seventh in career scoring (210) and single-season scoring (96). His jersey No. 21 was retired by Virginia.
A two-time First Team Academic All-American and Academic All-ACC selection, Barber compiled a 3.3 GPA in commerce and was inducted into the Academic All-American Hall of Fame in 2014. He was selected in the second round (36th overall) of the 1997 NFL Draft by the New York Giants and served as the starting running back for the Giants for 10 seasons from 1997-2006. A three-time Pro Bowler from 2004-06, Barber was named First Team All-Pro after leading the NFL in touches (411) and yards from scrimmage (2,390). From 2003-2006, he gained the most yards from scrimmage by any NFL running back in that four-year period. Barber helped the Giants to an appearance in Super Bowl XXXV.
Barber finished his career with 2,217 carries for 10,449 yards and 55 touchdowns along with 586 catches for 5,183 yards and 12 touchdowns. He is one of 29 NFL players to surpass 10,000 rushing yards and just one of three running backs to accumulate 10,000 rushing yards and 5,000 receiving yards. Barber holds New York Giants franchise records for carries and rushing yards. After retiring from the NFL, he landed a role with NBC contributing to the Today program, covering sports for NBC Sports and hosting entertainment events for NBC Universal. In 2008, Barber helped broadcast the 2008 Summer Olympics on MSNBC and was a commentator for Yahoo! sports for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Barber is a co-host of the Tiki and Tierney Show on CBS Sports Radio, and is the co-founder and co-chairman of Thuzio, a sports events and media company.
