A two-time Academic All-American, McColl compiled a 3.5 GPA as a pre-med student. He was active in the Big Brother organization and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

McColl played seven seasons with the San Francisco 49ers from 1981-87, accumulating 8.5 sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recovered for a touchdown. He was a member of the Super Bowl XVI and XIX Champion 49ers.

McColl earned his M.D. from Stanford in 1988 and is currently the CEO of Gauss Surgical, Inc., an early stage medical device company developing a mobile platform for real-time monitoring of surgical blood loss. McColl sits on the boards of Compact Imaging and Gauss Surgical.
