Boasting a 3.9 GPA as a pre-med student at Indiana, offensive lineman Kevin Speer was a two-time First Team Academic All-America and Academic All-Big Ten selection and received the Elvis J. Starr Award for Academic Excellence. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, he also won the Ted Whereatt Award for academic achievement in 1979.

Speer earned his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University and completed his internship and residency at the Duke University Medical Center. After completing a sports medicine and shoulder fellowship at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, he began practicing with Southeastern Orthopedics Sports Medicine and Shoulder Center in Raleigh, N.C.
