A two-year starter at tight end for Michigan under College Football Hall of Fame coach Bo Schembechler, Norm Betts helped the Wolverines to a 19-5 record, a Big Ten title and victories in the 1981 Rose Bowl and 1981 Bluebonnet Bowl. The recipient of the Meyer Morton Award as the most improved player from spring practice, he caught 30 passes for 341 yards and three touchdowns in his Michigan career.

A two-time Academic All-American and three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Betts received the Dr. Arthur D. Robinson Scholarship Award as Michigan’s top senior scholar-athlete. Compiling a 3.83 GPA in a liberal arts pre-dental program, he also received the Matthaei Award which is based on athletic and academic excellence.

Betts graduated summa cum laude from Michigan and stayed in Ann Arbor to complete dental school at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center while earning his Masters of Science in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Betts served as the assistant professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Pennsylvania and as an associate professor and chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in New Jersey.

In 1999, he returned to the University of Michigan and accepted a position at the as associate professor/chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Hospital Dentistry. Prior to joining Plymouth Ann Arbor Oral and Facial Surgery in 2002, Betts served as the chair of hospital dentistry in the University of Michigan Health System. Betts is the owner of Plymouth and Ann Arbor Maxiofacial Surgery in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
