A three-year letterman at defensive tackle for TCU, John McClean forced a fumble against Arkansas that led the way for TCU to pull off a 28-24 comeback win, the first win for the Horned Frogs in the series since 1958. Compiling a 3.74 GPA in geology, he was named an Academic All-American in 1980. After graduation, McClean served as an assistant teacher at Trinity Valley Middle School in Fort Worth, Texas, before taking a graduate assistant position at his alma mater from 1983-85. In 1986, he took an assistant coaching position at Mansfield High School (Texas). McClean served as a defensive coordinator at Petal High School (Miss.) from 1987-88 and at Pearland High School in Houston from 1989-90. He was hired at Oak Ridge High School in Conroe, Texas, in 1993, serving as an assistant head coach until 2003 when he was named the head coach. He retired following the 2004 season.
