A two-year starter at quarterback for North Carolina, Mark Maye led the team in total offense and passing in 1986 and 1987. A co-captain of the 1987 Tar Heels, he set a school record for longest pass play with a 93-yard touchdown strike to Randy Marriott in a 30-23 win over Georgia Tech. Maye also set program records for most passing yards in a game (406) and most total offense in a game (420). He ranks seventh in school history in career completion percentage (56.2), ninth in career passing yards (3,459), single-season completion percentage (62.5) and single-season pass efficiency (141.3), and 13th in career total offense (3,534). In 1986, Maye led the ACC in completion percentage (62.5), passing yards per attempt (8) and pass efficiency (141.3), and he led the Tar Heels to a 1986 Aloha Bowl victory over Arizona. A two-time Academic All-ACC selection, he compiled a 3.2 GPA in business administration. Maye finished his career with 263-of-468 passes completed for 3,459 yards and 20 touchdowns. After a brief stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he returned to Chapel Hill to become a graduate assistant and earn his MBA. Maye’s son, Luke, plays on UNC’s basketball team.
