The Furman team leader in interceptions in 1988 (2), linebacker Chris Roper helped the Paladins to the 1988 Division I-AA National Championship. A 1989 First Team All-American, he led Furman back to the Division I-AA Playoffs, recording 30 tackles in three games before bowing out to Stephen F. Austin in the semifinals. A First Team All-Southern Conference and All-South Carolina selection, Roper finished with a career 245 total tackles, 16 tackles for loss, six sacks and three interceptions. The 1989 Furman Male Athlete of the Year helped Furman pace the Southern Conference in rushing defense and total defense. A First Team Academic All-American, Roper earned his bachelor’s in physics from Furman and his doctorate in philosophy from Duke University. He is currently a scientist for Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corporation, one of the world's premier engineering, construction and project management companies in Monroeville, Pa.
