A three-year starter at nose guard under College Football Hall of Fame coach John Cooper at Ohio State, Greg Smith led the Buckeyes to a 23-11-2 record and three bowl appearances. A First Team All-Big Ten selection, he ranks 17th in school history in career sacks (14) and 22nd in single-season tackles for loss (14.5). Compiling a 3.4 GPA in zoology, Smith was an Academic All-American and four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. He was a member of the Dean’s List six times and was named an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete all four years. Smith won the John Galbreath Award as the team’s top student-athlete and was a member of the Sphinx Senior Honorary. He served as a research assistant for the Arthur James Cancer Research Center and Dr. Edward Martin Radio-Immunguided Surgery Team. Smith took part in Buckeyes Against Alcohol Abuse and Drug Use and Swim for Diabetes. Smith earned his M.D. from Ohio State in 1997 and is currently an orthopedic surgeon at the Harlingen (Texas) Medical Center.
