A 6-foot-1, 202-pound end for Houston, Horst Jurgen Paul was the first player in program history to be named the single captain of the Cougars. Paul, a native of Brasov, Romania, was named one of the ten most outstanding students out of 17,610 at the university by a faculty committee, and he maintained a B average in electrical engineering. Paul was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa leadership fraternity, Gamma Delta national Lutheran fraternity, and he was co-chairman of Theta Tau engineering fraternity, an ROTC squad leader, and chairman of the student leader’s conference. He caught 21 passes for 231 yards and a touchdown in three seasons for the Cougars, helping them to a 1962 Tangerine Bowl victory over Miami (Ohio).

After earning his master’s in industrial engineering from Houston and studying space science and engineering at Columbia, Paul began working at Watermark Solutions, LLC, in Houston. Paul serves as secretary of the University of Houston Letterwinner’s Association, and he was co-chairman of his class’ 50th Anniversary Reunion.
