An Academic All-SWC selection in 1966, John Richards compiled a 3.3 GPA in biology and chemistry, and he was a member of Who’s Who at TCU. The captain of the freshman football team, he never missed a football practice or class in four years.

In 1965, Richards led the Southwest Conference with five interceptions, and he accumulated 128 interception return yards, which ranks second all-time in TCU history. Richards earned All-SWC honors after the 1966 season. Selected as the Rogers Trophy award winner as TCU’s Most Valuable Player in 1966, Richards participated in the Blue-Gray All-Star Game and the Hula Bowl. He was also an honorable mention Academic All-American.

Richards completed medical school at the University of Texas-Southwestern and his internship, residency and fellowship at UT Health Science Center. He now practices as an orthopedic surgeon in Fort Worth, Texas. Richards was elected to the TCU Letterman’s Association Hall of Fame in 2008.
