An All-Ivy League selection in 1967, Rick McCarthy played a vital role in the Bulldogs Ivy League title under College Football Hall of Fame head coach Carm Cozza. He worked with underprivileged kids during the summers and compiled an 87 GPA in American studies. McCarthy passed away in 2007 at the age of 62.  His son, Ed, was a unanimous First Team All-American and National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete for the Bulldogs in 2006.
