A two-time All-America selection, Tom Lyons also excelled in the classroom and twice earned Academic All-SEC honors. Compiling a 3.5 GPA in psychology, he was a member of the Dean’s List and president of ODK and Blue Key. Lyons was also chairman of the University’s Student Alumni Advisory Board and vice-president of the G Club. A member of the 1968 SEC and Sugar Bowl Champion Bulldogs, he also earned All-SEC honors in 1970. Lyons was selected in the 14th round (350th overall) of the 1971 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos.  Lyons played for the Broncos for six seasons, starting in 43 consecutive games at one point during his career. An avid piano player, he was once a guest conductor for the Denver Symphony Orchestra while he was playing for the Broncos.

After his time in the NFL, Lyons went to the University of Colorado Medical School, graduating with a medical degree in 1977. He is now the Director of the Center for Women’s Care and Reproductive Surgery in Atlanta and the Director of Gynecologic Surgery and Chief of Surgery of the Advanced Surgery Center of Atlanta. Lyons also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the department of OB/GYN at Emory University Medical School of Atlanta. During his career, he has written more than 19 chapters for medical publications and has written 30 publications. His list of accolades includes the 1996 NCAA Silver Anniversary Award, the Bill Hartman Award as an outstanding former Georgia scholar-athlete and the 2013 Alumni of Distinction from Georgia.
