Boasting a perfect 4.0 GPA in accounting at Oklahoma, Joe Wylie twice earned Academic All-America and Academic All-Big 8 honors. An All-Big 8 selection in 1970, he helped the Sooners to a 7-4-1 record and a 24-24 draw with Alabama in the Bluebonnet Bowl. Wylie ran in a touchdown just before halftime to give Oklahoma a 21-14 lead. He added to his bowl game success with a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown in a 40-22 win against Auburn in the 1972 Sugar Bowl. Wylie rushed the ball 288 times for 1,653 yards and 17 touchdowns in his career, along with eight catches for 187 yards and three touchdown catches.

Wylie was selected in the fourth round (101st overall) of the 1973 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. He graduated from Oklahoma with a B.B.A. in accounting in 1974 and began his career in public accounting with Arthur Young and Company in 1975. He has been a CPA since 1977. He has also worked as the head of the tax department for an oil & gas company and as the head of a bank trust department. He has owned his own accounting practice emphasizing tax for more than twenty years.
