A three-year letterman at defensive tackle and co-captain for College Football Hall of Fame head coach Bo Schembechler’s Michigan team, David Gallagher helped the Wolverines to a 31-2-1 record, three Big Ten titles and a Rose Bowl appearance. An All-America and All-Big Ten selection, he recorded 175 career tackles and received the John F. Maulbetsch Award as Michigan’s outstanding freshman. A Second Team Academic All-American, Gallagher achieved a 3.0 GPA in zoology and was twice named Academic All-Big Ten. He was selected in the first round (20th overall) of the 1974 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. Gallagher played one season with the Bears and two seasons each with the New York Giants and Detroit Lions. He intercepted one pass in 51 NFL games.

Gallagher earned his M.D. from Michigan as well and completed his residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He began his own private practice in orthopedic surgery in Richmond, Mich., before joining Southern Indiana Orthopedics in 1990. Gallagher is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and the Indiana Orthopedic Society. In 2005, Gallagher was selected as one of the 100 greatest Michigan football players of all time by the "Motown Sports Revival," ranking 65th on the all-time team.
