Compiling a 3.7 GPA in finance at Oklahoma, Randy Hughes was a two-time Academic All-America and Academic All-Big 8 selection. An All-American and two-time All-Big 8 selection, he helped the Sooners and College Football Hall of Fame head coach Barry Switzer to a 32-1-1 record, three Big 8 titles, a Sugar Bowl victory and a National Championship in 1974. Hughes played a major role in a 28-14 win over No. 6 Nebraska in 1974, intercepting three passes and recording 11 tackles. The three-year starter recorded the fourth-longest play in school history after returning an interception 96 yards for a touchdown in a 34-7 win over Colorado in 1973. Hughes led the team with five interceptions that season and finished fourth in program history with 14 interceptions.

Hughes was selected in the fourth round (96th overall) of the 1975 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He was part of the “Dirty Dozen,” the nickname given to the 12 rookies on the Cowboys from the 1975 draft that helped the team reach Super Bowl X. Super Bowl XII was arguably his best game as a professional, registering five tackles, an interception and two fumbles recoveries, while earning MVP consideration. Hughes recorded nine interceptions in six seasons with the Cowboys. In 1979 he was voted to the 1970s All-Decade Big Eight Team and in 1995 to the All-Time Big Eight Team.

Hughes became a luxury homebuilder after his playing days and currently focuses on remodeling homes around the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
