A two-time team captain at Michigan under College Football Hall of Fame head coach Bo Schembechler, Kirk Lewis helped the Wolverines to a 28-5-2 record, two Big Ten titles and two bowl appearances in three seasons. Boasting a 3.36 GPA as a pre-med student, he was a First Team Academic All-America and two-time Academic All-SEC selection. Lewis received the Dr. Arthur D. Robinson Scholarship Award as the senior with the highest GPA and the Frederick Matthaei Award as the top junior scholar-athlete in 1974.

He received his M.D. from Michigan and completed his orthopedic surgery residency and fellowship in sports medicine at UCLA. Lewis also sought additional fellowship training in orthopedic trauma in St Gallen, Switzerland, and pediatric orthopedics at the University of California, San Francisco. He joined his long-time friend and colleague Dr. George Wade at the Idaho Sports Medicine Institute in 1985. Lewis took a leave from ISMI from 2007-11 where he was an Associate Professor at the University of California Davis. He was involved in education with orthopedic residents and their sports medicine fellowship program. He was also a team physician for the Sacramento Kings and the Sacramento Monarchs. Lewis is currently a member of the faculty at Family Medicine Residency of Idaho.
