A three-year letterman at safety for Maryland under Jerry Claiborne, his father and a College Football Hall of Fame head coach, Jonathan Claiborne helped the Terps to a 28-7-1 record, three bowl berths, two ACC titles and two bowl victories. He was a member of the 1976 Maryland squad, the winningest team in program history, which was undefeated until a 30-21 loss to Houston in the Cotton Bowl. Compiling a 3.6 GPA in accounting and history, Claiborne was a First Team Academic All-ACC selection and was named to the Dean’s List and the ACC Honor Roll four times. He was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Beta Alpha Psi, Beta Gamma Sigma and the John Marshall Society. Claiborne served as floor president of the Area Council in 1973, the vice president in 1974 and a representative in 1975.

He graduated magna cum laude from Maryland in 1977 and earned his J.D. from Duke University in 1981. Claiborne is currently a partner at Whiteford Taylor Preston, LLP, in Baltimore, Md.  He is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants. Claiborne was listed in Best Lawyers in America from 2011-13 and in Maryland Super Lawyers from 2007-13.

He served as president of the University of Maryland’s Young Alumni Organization and M Club, and as a board member of the University of Maryland Educational Foundation. Claiborne currently serves on the Duke Law School Alumni Association Board and the United Way of Central Maryland Community Partnership Board. He has received the Maryland State Bar Association Young Lawyers Section Distinguished Service Award, the District Court of Maryland Alternative Dispute Resolution Program Certificate of Appreciation, the Maryland Disability Law Center Certificate of Appreciation and the United Way Community Ambassador Award.
