A four-year letterman at quarterback for Clemson, Steve Fuller earned just about every award and honor possible. He started 34-of-43 games for the Tigers, helping them to a 24-19-3 record and a MVP-worthy performance in a 17-15 Gator Bowl victory over Ohio State in 1978. A Third-Team All American, Fuller was also a two-time All-ACC selection, a two-year team co-captain and MVP and the 1978 Most Outstanding Clemson Athlete.

The MVP of the 1977 Clemson-South Carolina football game, he also received the Atlanta Touchdown Club Award as the most outstanding back in the South. Fuller is the only Clemson player to be twice-named ACC Player of the Year and is the school’s only NCAA Top V Award winner.

The team leader in scoring in 1975 (36 points), Fuller was also the team leader in passing yards from 1976-78. He ranked in the top-25 nationally in total offense per game in both 1977 (172.7) and 1978 (182.1). In 1978, Clemson ranked in the top-25 nationally in total offense per game (436.7) and scoring per game (31.9). He ranks fifth in school history in passing yards per attempt (7.9), eighth in career passing yards (4,359) and touchdowns responsible for (44), ninth in career passing attempts (554) and 10th in career completions (287) and passing touchdowns (22). Fuller also recorded the fourth-longest passing touchdown in school history (87 yards) to lead the Tigers to a 28-24 win over Maryland, clinching the ACC title and a berth in the Gator Bowl.

A two-time Academic All-American and three-time Academic All-ACC selection, Fuller compiled a 3.93 GPA in history and made the Dean’s List six consecutive semesters. He was a member of Blue Key, Mortar Board, the Tiger Brotherhood, the Block C Club and Phi Eta Sigma. Fuller’s No. 4 was retired by the school, and he was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame and the Clemson Ring of Honor. He was also selected to the ACC 50-Year Anniversary Team and was inducted into the State of South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame.

Fuller was selected in the first round (23rd overall) of the 1979 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. He played four seasons with the Chiefs, one season with the Los Angeles Rams and three seasons with the Chicago Bears. Fuller was the backup quarterback of the 1985 Super Bowl Champion Bears. In 90 NFL games, he completed 605-of-1,066 passes for 7,156 yards and 28 touchdowns. Fuller also ran for 908 yards and 11 touchdowns on 186 carries. He was named by Sports Illustrated as one of the top 15 backup quarterbacks of all-time, based on his 1985 season with the Bears.

He is currently a sales agent for Gateway Realty in Hilton Head Island, S.C., and the offensive coordinator for the Hilton Head Prep School football team. Fuller was elected vice president of the South Carolina Golf Association for 2014-15 and is on track to become president of the organization in two years.
