Maurice Doke, a powerhouse guard-linebacker during his time at Texas, started all 31 games of his varsity career from 1957-1959, and he established himself an inspiration to his Longhorn teammates both athletically and academically.

Doke boasted many achievements while playing at UT. He made the First Team All-Southwest Conference team. He earned First Team All-America honors, and he took home co-MVP honors in the 1960 Cotton Bowl despite the 23-14 Longhorn loss to Syracuse. His senior year, his teammates selected him as the recipient of the George “Hook” McCullough MVP trophy, and the Houston Post named him the Southwest Conference Lineman of the Year.

The 200-pound guard also excelled off the field. A student of chemical engineering, Doke served as the editor-in-chief of the UT Chemical Engineering Society Magazine. His prowess as a student-athlete earned him a spot as an Academic All-American and on the All Southwest-Conference Academic team in 1957 and 1958. A Rhodes Scholar candidate, Doke won several academic awards, including the Travis County Exes Scholarship Award and the Ex-Students’ Association Scholarship Award.

Following graduation, Doke served two terms as a member of the Texas State House of Representatives in the mid 1960s. He passed away in 2018.
