W. Patrick Smyth earned three letters as a starting guard for the University of Wyoming from 1957-59, where he was credited for making the Cowboys’ interior line the best in the Skyline Conference. During his senior year, Wyoming earned a No. 16 ranking and won the Skyline Conference Championship with a 9-1 record. That year, Smyth was also named Second-Team All Conference.

A leader among his peers, Smyth served as president of the Student Body his senior year. He was an honor student in pre-medicine, and he won Academic-All Conference honors as well.

In 2013, Smyth along with the rest of the 1959 Skyline Championship team earned induction to the University of Wyoming Hall of Fame. Smyth legacy continues at his alma mater through a scholarship called the W. Patrick Smyth, M.D. Memorial Student-Athlete Scholarship. The award is bestowed on a “football player with the highest GPA among the players, who completed his eligibility for football and has been accepted to graduate school at the institution of his choice.”
