Barry Bullard distinguished himself as a three-year starting tackle at the University of Washington from 1958-60. His impressive football resume began at Marshfield High School in Coos Bend, Ore., and he twice earned All-State honors, leading his high school team to three straight undefeated seasons and three state championships.

Bullard became part of the first recruiting class at Washington for Coach Jim Owens, a College Football Hall of Fame inductee as a player at Oklahoma. Under Coach Owens, the six-foot-four, 225-pound tackle participated in two Rose Bowl wins: a 44-8 victory over Wisconsin in 1960 and a 17-7 triumph against Minnesota in 1961. In the 1960 game, Bullard claimed honors as the Rose Bowl outstanding lineman, and he received the Pac-8 Conference Medal, which honors outstanding senior male and female student-athletes and is now called the Pac-12 Tom Hansen Conference Medal.

At Washington, Bullard pursued a degree in civil engineering. An excellent student, he became a member of three undergraduate honor societies, including Tau Beta Pu, a national honorary engineering society. After graduating in 1962, Bullard enrolled in the Air Force, and he received his master’s degree in Astronautics and Space Facilities at the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1968.

After obtaining his master’s degree, Bullard served in the Air Force for 16 years. A Vietnam veteran, he received a Bronze Star for his service at the Phu Cat Air Force Base. He retired from military service because of medical complications, but he continued to use his engineering skills as a math tutor to middle school students in the Seattle area. Born Dec. 26, 1938 in North Bend, Ore., Bullard passed away March 26, 2012. He was 73.
