NFF National Scholar-Athletes
Described as a “team man,” Alan Rozycki exemplified the scholar-athlete ideal at Dartmouth College. Always atop the leaderboards, he led the Ivy League in pass receptions in 1959. In the 1960 season he broke the Dartmouth single-season rushing record with 725 yards, earning himself a First-Team All-Ivy selection.
Rozycki racked up the awards his senior season, earning the Coach Bob Blackman Trophy, given to the player who contributed most to the success of the team, and the Manners Makyth Man Award, bestowed on a player who best conducted himself to the advantage of Dartmouth College. Rozycki was honored by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston with the Nils V. “Swede” Nelson Award, which is awarded annually to the player who by his conduct on and off the gridiron demonstrates a high esteem for the football code and exemplifies sportsmanship to an outstanding degree.
Rozycki also achieved at the highest levels in the classroom. Boasting a 4.6 GPA, the pre-medical student landed a coveted nomination for a Rhodes Scholarship, one of the most prestigious awards in all of academia. He was one of only 15 students studying zoology, a degree he put to use in his pursuit of a medical degree.
After graduating, Rozycki attended to Dartmouth Medical School, and he received his M.D. from Harvard. He returned to Dartmouth in 1972, joining the pediatrics staff at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical School where he would enjoy a lengthy 36-year career. Upon his retirement, Rozycki started a new legacy with the Alan A. Rozycki Commitment to Excellence Award, which is given to exceptional Dartmouth pediatricians. He currently serves as an emeritus professor of Pediatrics at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.
