Steve Eisenhauer was a great athlete, a great student, and a great leader in the nation's armed forces. He was All-America guard for Navy in 1952 and 1953. The Washington Touchdown Club honored him as "outstanding local player." He also was named Academic All-America; he had a 3.3 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, and in 1992 he was named to the GTE Academic All-America Hall of Fame. He added a graduate degree in aeronautical engineering at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., in 1964 and a master's degree from George Washington University in 1971, where he authored a research paper providing the basis for Congressional approval of funding for the Children's Head Start Program. Eisenhauer served as an operations officer in Vietnam in 1966-67, flew 120 combat missions; he retired in 1975 with the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps. Among his military decorations: Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "v", and Air Medal with 8 Gold Stars. After leaving the military, he became a member of the executive committee for the Naval Academy Foundation and served as a consultant to the Naval Systems Command on military and missile programs.
