One of the marks of a great athlete is versatility and having the ability to beat you by several means. Brad Calip was one such player. In 1983, Calip led the Tigers onto the national scene as he guided the Orange Rush offense. ECU led the nation in rushing and finished among the leaders in scoring and total offense. Calip gained 1,002 yards on the ground and scored 14 touchdowns. However, when the defense was primed to stop the run, Calip was able to adjust and beat you with the pass. As a senior, he became an NAIA All-America as he surpassed the 1,000 yard mark on both the ground (1,135 yards, 19 touchdowns) and in the air (1,185 yards, 13 touchdowns). His triple-option abilities perplexed defenses with his elusive running, deft ball handling and accurate passing. Calip was a four-year starter and a four-year All-Conference performer. He took the Tigers from a 2-7 record in 1981 to a 10-2 mark as a senior. As a sophomore, he gained 252 yards and scored seven touchdowns in a contest against Northwestern Oklahoma State. After graduation, Brad had professional stints in the USFL, CFL and the Arena Football League.
