Navy's Fred "Buzz" Borries won distinction on the playing field and later aboard an aircraft carrier in World War II. In 1933, his touchdown gave Navy a 7-0 victory over Notre Dame; it was Navy's first victory in the series in seven years. In 1934, he helped Navy score its first victory over Army since 1921. Borries carried the ball 36 times and set up Slade Cutter's field goal to win 3-0. Ten years later aboard the carrier "Gambier Bay," Commander Fred Borries won a Bronze Star for meritorious service. As air officer he was able to launch all the ship's aircraft while the vessel was sinking and under heavy fire. After the ship was sunk he took charge of the life rafts and saved the lives of 200 crew members.
