Two-time small college All-America tackle Calvin Roberts opened the holes on offense and closed the door on defense for Gustavus Adolphus teams that dominated the Minnesota Intercollegiate Conference. In his four seasons, the Golden Gusties won three league titles and had a 23-1 conference record. During that era Roberts became a three-time All-MIAC selection. The 1951 team was undefeated as Roberts won the first of his two All-America honors; the next year the Gusties won their third consecutive league title. Drafted by the New York Giants, an illness prevented him from pursuing a professional career. Roberts then entered the Marine Corps where he was named to the All-Marine Corps team while playing for the El Toro Marines. Roberts then became a line coach at Augsburg College before becoming the physical education supervisor for the city of St. Louis Park. Roberts died in 1966.
