Frank Loria excelled as defensive back for Virginia Tech. He started every game for three years, 1965-67, was two-time All American and in 1967, Academic All-America. Loria was famous for his uncanny ability to diagnose opposition plays They called him a coach on the field. He stood 5-9 in height, weighed 174, and had great speed. He was co-captain his senior year. He won the Williams Award, a campus salute for leadership. His jersey, No. 10, was retired. In his career he returned 61 punts, averaging 13 yards on each return. He ran four punts back for touchdowns. One was a school record 95 yards. Loria was assistant coach at Marshall University on Nov. 14, 1970, when all players and coaches died in a plane crash. He was 23 years-old.
