Louis Salmon was the first great Irish back. Seventy-five years after Red Salmon graduated from Notre Dame, the Irish record book continued to tell the world just how great he really was. His 105 points scored as a senior in 1903 and his 36 career touchdowns still stood as school standards until 1985. Through four varsity seasons, Red Salmon scored a total of 250 points - and those were tallied in the days when a touchdown was only worth five points. While Red toiled in the Irish backfield, Notre Dame posted a four-year mark of 28-6- 4. The 1903 team, with Salmon as captain, finished 8-0-1. Northwestern managed a 0-0 tie that year, but for the first time in history, a Notre Dame squad had gone without surrendering a single point. Salmon in 1903 was named to Walter Camp's third All-America team.
