J. Lester "Pete" Mauthe lettered four years as a fullback for Penn State 1909-12, and the school had a 26-2-4 record in his time. In 1911, the Nittany Lions went 8-0-1. Mauthe was the team's punter and place kicker, and he beat Pittsburgh 3-0 with a 35-yard field goal. In 1912 Mauthe was captain, Penn State went all eight of its games, and he scored 119 of the team's 285 points. He made a 51-yard field goal against Pittsburgh. In 1913 he was head coach at Gettysburg College with a 3-6-1 record. Mauthe worked his way through college and graduated with a degree in metallurgy. He joined Youngstown Steel and Tube Co. and rose to the rank of company president. In 1964 Penn State gave him its Distinguished Alumnus Award. He served on the board of trustees at both Penn State and Youngstown University. Mauthe established a scholarship at Penn State for engineering students. He was born July 8, 1890, at Turkey City, Pennsylvania. He died January 1, 1967.
