Greene and Bajema Selected in 2005 NFL Draft

David Greene and Billy Bajema, both honored as 2004 National Scholar-Athletes by The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) last December, were each selected over the weekend in the 2005 NFL Draft.

Greene, who set the NCAA record for career victories as a starting quarterback at the University of Georgia by notching 42 wins, went to the Seattle Seahawks with the 21st selection in the third round. He was the 85th player taken overall. Greene will look to compete for playing time behind Seahawks Pro Bowl quarterback Matt Hasselback.

Bajema, a tight end from Oklahoma State University, was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round. Equally impressive as both a run blocker and a receiver, Bajema caught 52 receptions for 709 yards and four touchdowns throughout his four-year career with the Cowboys. He joins a talented group chosen by the 49ers in this year’s draft, including first overall selection Alex Smith.

As two of fifteen Scholar-Athletes selected by the NFF, Bajema and Greene both received $18,000 post-graduate fellowships. The National Football League endowed Bajema’s scholarship, while Greene took home the Florida Citrus Sports Award. In addition, the two were finalists for the prestigious Draddy Trophy, widely considered in many circles as “The Academic Heisman.” This year’s Draddy recipient was Michael Munoz from the University of Tennessee.

To date, more than 640 young men have been honored as NFF Scholar-Athletes since 1959. In addition to Bajema, Greene and Munoz, the 2004 class included: Jeffrey Berk (West Virginia); Thomas Cleaver (Middlebury); Trenton Franz (Wyoming); Josh Haldi (Northern Illinois); James Leonhard (Wisconsin); Brandon Mason (Elon); Rocky Myers (Wesley); Michael Quarshie (Columbia); Bryan Randall (Virginia Tech); Ty Touchstone (Eastern New Mexico); Craig Unger (Morehead State); and John Woock (Washingon U. in St. Louis).
