On-Campus Salute Honors WSP's Legendary QB

Wisconsin – Stevens Point legend Kirk Baumgartner, regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NAIA history, was honored Saturday, September 24, with an On-Campus Salute during halftime of the UWSP-Waldorf College (Iowa) match-up. The quarterback was recently enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind., during Enshrinement Weekend August 12-13.

As part of an annual celebration, every Hall of Famer returns to his alma mater to receive an On-Campus Salute during the year of his induction. With official school dignitaries on hand, an NFF representative presents the inductee with his official framed Hall of Fame plaque. The institution receives an identical plaque for display within their respective Hall of Honor.

Baumgartner, who threw 122 touchdown passes throughout his collegiate career, received First Team All-America honors three times and ranks as the NAIA’s all-time career passing yards.

Wisconsin – Stevens Point bounced back following a loss to defending Division III champion Linfield College by beating Waldorf, 42-13, in their annual "Spud Bowl".

Kirk Baumgartner

Arguably the best quarterback in NAIA history, Wisconsin – Stevens Point’s Kirk Baumgartner rewrote the national, conference and school record books while guiding the Pointers to three playoff appearances. In August, he will become the school’s first player inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

The school’s only three-time First Team NAIA All-America selection, Baumgartner currently ranks as the NAIA’s all-time career passing yards leader with 14,847 yards. A two-time NAIA National Player of the Year, he owns three of the top seven greatest single-season passing performances in NAIA history.

With 122 career-touchdown passes, Baumgartner ranks in the top five, among all divisions of play, in college football history. A three-time First Team All-Conference pick, he was twice named conference Player of the Year.

Drafted in the ninth round of the 1990 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers, Baumgartner was inducted into the Wisconsin – Stevens Point Athletic Hall of Fame.
