Indiana University head football coach Terry Hoeppner, who had two brain surgeries in the last 18 months, died this morning of complications from a brain tumor. He was 59.
“This is a sad day within our football community,” said NFF President & CEO Steven J. Hatchell. “He was a courageous leader for IU and a strong supporter of the NFF and our mission to build leaders through football.”
As the head coach at Indiana and at Miami (Ohio) prior to that, Hoeppner became very active in the local NFF chapters, speaking at numerous scholar-athlete banquets and attending countless charity events.
Hoeppner was named IU’s 26th head coach in 2004, and went 9-14 in two seasons for the Hoosiers. He had taken three medical leaves since December 2005 and had not been seen publicly since late February.
On June 15, Indiana announced that assistant coach Bill Lynch would serve as head coach for the 2007 season, allowing Hoeppner more time to recover. He is survived by his wife, Jane, and three children.
