FEATURED MOMENT:
Jan. 10, 1960: In the first Hula Bowl that featured an all-collegiate contest, LSU coach Paul Dietzel's East squad led by Navy Heisman Trophy winner Joe Bellino, dominates the West 34-8 before 23,000 in Honolulu Stadium. The West is coached by Oklahoma Hall of Fame coach Bud Wilkinson.
OTHER NOTABLE DATES:
Jan. 8, 1978: 11,000 attend the first Canadian-American Bowl in Tampa. The U.S. all-stars down the Canadian all-stars 22-7 behind the running of Florida RB Tony Green.
Jan. 9, 1993: In what would be the final Japan Bowl, 46,000 watch the East down the West 27-13 in Yokohama, Japan. Among the stars playing the game was Fresno State FB Lorenzo Neal, currently paving the way for LaDanlian Tomlinson of the San Diego Chargers.
Jan. 11, 1890: The University of California tops Posens Athletic Club 6-0 in what would be the first of four wins for the Golden Bears in four contests between the two entities between January 11 and March 1.
Jan. 12, 1985: All-stars from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) edge their rivals from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) 14-0 in the third Freedom Bowl All-Star Classic before 18,352 at Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium.
Jan. 13, 1946: At the Army Pacific Olympics in Osaka, Japan, the 11th Airborne Angels defeat Clark Field 27-6. The Army divides the Pacific into four competitive zones, then puts on a full-fledged 15 sport Olympics. Colonels compete side by side with privates. Later in the month, the 11th Airborne Angels defeat Honolulu All-Stars, led by Hall of Fame coach Jock Sutherland.
Jan. 14, 1984: A crowd of over 38,000 in Mobile, watch Alabama quarterback Walter Lewis guide the South to a 21-20 win over the North in the 35th Senior Bowl. The game's biggest play is turned in by Mississippi's Andre Townsend who blocks a North extra point in the fourth quarter, which would have tied the game.
