FEATURED MOMENT:
December 8, 1990- College Football Hall of Fame coach Jim
Young walked the sidelines in his final game as a head coach, a 30-20
Army win over Navy in Philadelphia. In 16 seasons at Arizona, Purdue and
Army, Young compiled a 120-71-2 record, a 5-1 bowl record and a share
of the 1973 WAC Championship.
OTHER NOTABLE DATES:
December 6, 2003- No. 13 Kansas State upset No. 1 Oklahoma,
35-7 in Kansas City, to win its first Big 12 Championship. The
previously undefeated Sooners looked to be in control early when
tailback Kejuan Jones opened the scoring with a 42-yard touchdown run.
The Wildcats' defense and explosive backfield then seized control
indefinitely. Diminutive tailback Darren Sproles compiled 323 yards of
total offense and quarterback Ell Roberson tossed four touchdowns, while
Kansas State limited Oklahoma to its lowest scoring output since 1998.
December 7, 2002- Marshall claimed the MAC Championship with a
49-45 win over Toledo in Huntington, W.V. Thundering Herd signal caller
Byron Leftwich, who threw for 402 yards and four scores, drove Marshall
to a 28-17 halftime lead. Rockets tailback Trinity Dawson scored two of
his four touchdowns in the third quarter to push Toledo to a 32-28
advantage. The teams traded scores in the final quarter until Leftwich
hit wide receiver Darius Watts for the game-winning 40-yard score with
just 49 seconds remaining.
December 9, 1935- Chicago's Jay Berwanger won the first
Heisman Trophy, which was known as the Downtown Athletic Club's Trophy
to the Outstanding Player East of the Mississippi River at the time.
Berwanger was a runaway winner over Army's Monk Meyer, Notre Dame's
William Shakespeare and Princeton's Pepper Constable. He was inducted
into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954.
December 10, 1988- Fresno State topped Western Michigan in
the eighth California Bowl, 35-30 in Fresno, Calif. Despite being
outgained and losing the turnover battle, the hometown Bulldogs'
big-play offense produced touchdowns of 55, 38, 65 and 26 yards to lead
the way.
December 11, 1977- Under College Football Hall of Fame coach
Eddie Robinson, Grambling downed Temple 35-32 in the Tokyo Bowl in
Tokyo, Japan. The Tigers' victory marked one of the first wins by a
historically black college over a Division I opponent.
December 12, 1925- Hawaii topped Colorado State, 41-0 in
Manoa, Hawaii. The pushed Hawaii's winning-streak to 18 games, and
snapped a 10-game winning streak for the Rams. Otto Klum, the winningest
coach in Hawaii football history, would eventually drive his team's
winning streak to a school-record 20 games.
