Hall of Fame Candidate Capsule: Bob Berry

Leading in to the announcement of the 2012 College Football Hall of Fame Class, the National Football Foundation highlights members on the Hall of Fame Ballot. The 2012 Class will be announced on May 15 in New York City.

SCHOOL: Oregon

POSITION: Quarterback

YEARS: 1962-64

ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Berry accomplished a number of firsts in Oregon football history. He was the first quarterback to lead the Ducks to three consecutive winning seasons, and the first signal caller to top 1,000 passing yards in back-to-back seasons. In fact, Berry came five yards short in 1962 from eventually becoming the first quarterback to reach 1,000 passing yards for three straight seasons. Berry guided the Ducks to a 21-8-2 mark from 1962-64, including a 21-14 victory over SMU in the 1963 Sun Bowl, for which he earned MVP honors. Upon graduation, Berry owned Oregon career records with 271 completions on 494 attempts for 4,297 yards with 39 touchdowns against 24 interceptions. His career touchdown passes record and single-season touchdown passes mark (16 in 1963) lasted for more than 20 years.

ALL-STAR GAME ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Bledsoe competed in the Coaches All-American Game, the East-West Shrine Game and the Hula Bowl upon graduation.

NOTABLES: “I have coached some pretty fair teams and some good quarterbacks, but Bob Berry is the best,” said former Oregon head coach Len Casanova. Berry was an inaugural inductee into the University of Oregon Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992.
