Hall of Fame Candidate Capsule: Brian Bosworth

Leading in to the announcement of the 2012 College Football Hall of Fame Class, the National Football Foundation highlights members on the Hall of Fame Ballot. The 2012 Class will be announced on May 15 in New York City.

SCHOOL: Oklahoma

POSITION: Linebacker

YEARS: 1984-86

ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS: The only player in college football history ever to win the Butkus Award twice, Bosworth was a key member of College Football Hall of Fame coach Barry Switzer’s 1985 national championship squad. The Sooners enjoyed a 31-4-1 overall record, three Big 8 championships and two Orange Bowl victories in three appearances during Bosworth’s stay on campus. The linebacker led the Sooners in tackles all three years in Norman, and set the school single-game record with 22 stops against Miami in 1986. The three-time All-Big 8 performer ranks fifth in school history with 395 career tackles and also claims 27 TFL and 12 sacks.  

ACADEMIC HONORS: Also a three-time Academic All-Big 8 honoree, in 1986 Bosworth was named a GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American. He earned a degree in communications in 1986.

NOTABLES: Bosworth founded a charity called Boz’s Kids which provided activities for underprivileged children in Oklahoma.  He co-authored an autobiography with Sports Illustrated’s Rick Reilly titled “The Boz”. After retiring from football, Bosworth launched an acting career in 1991 and claims 16 roles to his credit.
