Hall of Fame Candidate Capsule: Bob Breunig

Leading in to the announcement of the 2012 College Football Hall of Fame Class, the National Football Foundation highlights members on the Hall of Fame Ballot. The 2012 Class will be announced on May 15 in New York City.

SCHOOL: Arizona State

POSITION: Linebacker

YEARS: 1972-74

ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Playing under College Football Hall of Fame coach Frank Kush, Breunig helped the Sun Devils achieve two 10-win seasons and a 28-8 overall mark, including two Fiesta Bowl wins and the 1972 WAC championship. A three-time All-WAC honoree, he left school holding the career total tackles record (353), the career solo tackles record (206) and both single-season tackles records, compiling 145 total stops and 92 solo tackles in 1974. Each of those marks still ranks among Arizona State’s top five all-time. He was named team MVP as a senior in 1974, was elected captain two times in his career.

CIVIC HONORS: Breunig was named the Dallas Father of the Year in 2006 by Father of the Year awards, an organization benefitting children’s charities in northern Texas.  

NOTABLES: He was honored as a Dick Butkus Silver Anniversary winner in 1999. Breunig is a member of the ASU Hall of Fame and the WAC All-Time Football Team.
