Hall of Fame Candidate Capsule: Mark Carrier

Leading in to the announcement of the 2012 College Football Hall of Fame Class, the National Football Foundation highlights members on the Hall of Fame Ballot. The 2012 Class will be announced on May 15 in New York City.

SCHOOL: USC

POSITION: Safety

YEARS: 1987-89

ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS: The only Thorpe Award recipient in USC history, Carrier helped lead the Trojans to three Rose Bowl appearances. The two-time unanimous All-American and two-time All-Pac-10 honoree recorded 336 tackles, 11 TFL 13 interceptions, 27 pass breakups and four fumble recoveries in his career. He led the Pac-10 with seven interceptions as a senior, and helped the Trojans achieve a 27-8-1 record during his years on campus.  

POST-COLLEGE CAREER: Carrier played 11 NFL seasons for the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions and Washington Redskins, making three Pro Bowls. The 2012 football, season will mark Carrier’s ninth as a coach, and first as the defensive backs coach for the Cincinnati Bengals.   

CIVIC SERVICE: A two-time recipient of the Detroit Lions’  Joe Schmidt Leadership Award, he served as the Honorary Chairman of the Special Education District of Lake County, Ill. Staying involved in the Los Angeles community, Carrier holds a 3-on-3 fundraising basketball tournament in Long Beach, Calif., and has worked with Los Angeles Earthquake Relief. Carrier’s foundation, MacKids, donates to many children’s charities. He has also volunteered with Special Olympics.
