Hall of Fame Candidate Capsule: Joe Garten

Leading in to the announcement of the 2012 College Football Hall of Fame Class, the National Football Foundation highlights members on the Hall of Fame Ballot. The 2012 Class will be announced on May 15 in New York City.

SCHOOL: Colorado

POSITION: Offensive guard

YEARS: 1987-90

ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS: A consensus All-American as a junior and a unanimous All-America pick as a senior, Garten helped drive the Buffaloes to the 1990 national title. The team captain set the school record for career starts (44), allowing just two sacks and drawing three penalties in more than 2,400 snaps for his career. He won CU’s Derek Singleton Award for team spirit, dedication and enthusiasm. A member of back-to-back Big 8 champions in 1989 and 1990, he was twice a unanimous all-conference honoree. The 1990 Outland Trophy finalist helped Colorado appear in three bowl games, including the Orange Bowl in each of his final years on campus. The Buffaloes earned a 37-10-1 record with Garten on the roster.

POST-COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CAREER: Garten gained experience at multiple levels of professional football. He played two seasons with the Green Bay Packers, posted two seasons in the Canadian Football League, earning All-CFL honors in 1994, and completed his career with two years in the World Football League.    

CURRENT CAREER: Garten currently owns and operates his own custom cabinet business.
