Hall of Fame Candidate Capsule: Willie Gault

Leading in to the announcement of the 2012 College Football Hall of Fame Class, the National Football Foundation highlights members on the Hall of Fame Ballot. The 2012 Class will be announced on May 15 in New York City.

SCHOOL: Tennessee

POSITION: Wide receiver

YEARS: 1979-82

ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Playing for College Football Hall of Fame coach Johnny Majors, the 1982 All-American set an NCAA record with three kickoff returns for touchdowns as a sophomore. He left school as arguably the best return man in SEC history, holding league records for career and single-season return yardage, and career and single-season return touchdowns. Gault finished his career with 1,482 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. The Volunteers appeared in three bowl games with Gault on the club, and posted a 26-20-1 overall record.

CIVIC SERVICE: He is the founder of Athletes for Life, a non-profit charity which is focused on saving lives through health education and providing medical access for everyone through the use of revolutionary heart monitoring technology with new detection capabilities: AthletesForLife.com.

NOTABLES: An accomplished track athlete, Gault became the first person in NCAA history to win both the 60-yard dash and the 60-yard hurdles at the 1982 NCAA Indoor Championships. A year later, he won a bronze medal in the 100-meter hurdles and a gold medal as part of a world-record setting 4x100-meter relay at the World Track and Field Championships. In 2006, he set a world record in Master’s 100 Meters for people aged 45-49 with a 10.72 mark. Gault also appeared in movies and TV shows such as The Pretender, The West Wing and S.W.A.T.
