Hall of Fame Candidate Capsule: Otis Armstrong

Leading in to the announcement of the 2012 College Football Hall of Fame Class, the National Football Foundation highlights members on the Hall of Fame Ballot. The 2012 Class will be announced on May 15 in New York City.

SCHOOL: Purdue

POSITION: Running Back

YEARS: 1970-72

ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Armstrong departed school holding nearly every major rushing record in Purdue annals. His 670 career carries remain a school record, while his 3,315 career rushing yards remained a school best until 1995 and was also a Big Ten record at the time. Armstrong's senior campaign in 1972 remains the best in Purdue history. He earned consensus All-America honors by rushing 243 times for 1,361 yards (both single-season school records at the time). Armstrong led the Big Ten in rushing that season, and his 276-yard effort versus Indiana remains a Boilermakers best. An eighth-place finisher in Heisman Trophy voting in 1972, Armstrong ranked sixth in NCAA career rushing at career's end. He was named the team MVP and won the Swede Nelson Award for sportsmanship in 1972.

CIVIC SERVICE: Armstrong is an active church member and frequently helps young children stay out of trouble by teaching football skills.

FOOTBALL HONORS: Armstrong was inducted into the Purdue Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997.
