Hall of Fame Candidate Capsule: Jess Lewis

Leading in to the announcement of the 2012 College Football Hall of Fame Class, the National Football Foundation highlights members on the Hall of Fame Ballot. The 2012 Class will be announced on May 15 in New York City.

SCHOOL: Oregon State

POSITION: Defensive tackle

YEARS: 1966-67, 1969

ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Named a 1967 All-American and a two-time All-Pac 8 honoree, Lewis won the Hayward Award in 1969 as the state of Oregon’s top amateur athlete. The Beaver’s co-MVP as a senior, he was named to the All-West Coast football team in 1967. Lewis also participated in the College All-Star Game, the East-West Shrine Game and the Coaches All-America Bowl in 1970. Oregon State owned a 20-9-1 record with Lewis on the team.  

CIVIC SERVICE: Lewis serves as a community alcohol and drug counselor and a lecturer for OSU’s Drugs and Sport class. He also schedules current OSU student-athletes to speak at middle and grade schools about drugs and alcohol and speaks at various schools himself. He has received the Marion County Community Service Achievement Award, the Benton County Mental Health Association Counseling and Intervention Award. Also an Honorary Mayor of Aumsville, Ore., he is a committee member for the 4-H and Future Farmers of America organizations

NOTABLES: Also an accomplished wrestler, Lewis won two NCAA wrestling titles and was a member of the 1968 U.S. Olympic Team. He is a member of the Oregon State Hall of Fame and the State of Oregon Sports Hall of Fame
