Class, the National Football Foundation highlights members on the Hall of Fame
Ballot. The 2012 Class will be announced on May 15 in New York City.
SCHOOL: Syracuse
POSITION: Wide receiver
YEARS: 1976-79
ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Named an All-American in 1979,
Monk won the Lambert Trophy as the top college football player in the East
following his freshman and senior seasons. He finished his career by leading
the Orange to
an Independence Bowl victory in their first postseason appearance in 13 years. The
last player in Syracuse
history to lead the club in receiving three consecutive seasons, Monk posted
102 receptions for 1,644 yards and nine touchdowns. He compiled 3,899
all-purpose yards and set the school’s single-game receiving record with 14
grabs against Navy in 1977.
POST-COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CAREER: Chosen in the first round
of the 1980 NFL Draft, Monk played for the Washington Redskins from 1980-93 and
the New York Jets in 1994. He set an all-time single-season receiving mark in
1984 by catching 104 passes. Monk broke Steve Largent’s all-time career
receiving record with 819 career receptions, and he was inducted into the Pro
Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
CIVIC SERVICE: An active member of the NFF Central New York
Chapter, Monk sits on the board of trustees at Syracuse. The co-founder of the Good Samaritan
Foundation, he is involved with the Leukemia Society, Project Harvest and I
Have a Dream.
