Hall of Fame Candidate Capsule: Tom Nowatzke

Leading in to the announcement of the 2012 College Football Hall of Fame Class, the National Football Foundation highlights members on the Hall of Fame Ballot. The 2012 Class will be announced on May 15 in New York City.

SCHOOL: Indiana

POSITION: Fullback

YEARS: 1961-64

ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS: A 1964 All-American and a two-time All-Big Ten honoree, Nowatzke led the conference in rushing as a junior. Elected one of the Top Ten Men on Campus in 1965 and a two-time Balfour Award for Athletic Excellence winner, he set a school record with five field goals in 1963 and led the Hooisers by playing an average of 51.3 minutes per game in 1964. He competed in the East-West Shrine Game, the Senior Bowl and the Coaches All-American Game.

POST-COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CAREER: Chosen in the first round of the 1965 NFL Draft and AFL Draft, Nowatzke played five seasons with the Detroit Lions and three seasons with the Baltimore Colts. He was the leading rusher in the Colts’ Super Bowl V victory over the Dallas Cowboys.  

NOTABLES: Nowatzke is a member of the Indiana University Football Hall of Fame and the Indiana High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
