Hall of Fame Candidate Capsule: Ron Rivera

Leading in to the announcement of the 2012 College Football Hall of Fame Class, the National Football Foundation highlights members on the Hall of Fame Ballot. The 2012 Class will be announced on May 15 in New York City.

SCHOOL: California

POSITION: Linebacker

YEARS: 1980-83

ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS: The 1983 Lombardi Award winner, Rivera was named MVP of the 1984 East-West Shrine Game. The Pac-10 Co-Defensive Player of the Year as a senior, Rivera led the Golden Bears in tackles for three consecutive seasons. Serving as team captain during his junior and senior seasons, Rivera was named team MVP in 1981 and 1983.

POST-COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CAREER: Rivera played for the Chicago Bears from 1984-92. An Ed Block Courage Award winner, he previously served as the linebackers coach for the Philadelphia Eagles 1999-2003, and as the  Former defensive coordinator for the Bears and San Diego Chargers. He is currently the head coach of the Carolina Panthers.

CIVIC SERVICE: Rivera co-founded the nonprofit Omni-Sport in 2001, an organization that sponsors sports camps for kids. He has also served as a guest speaker for DARE and for the United Way
